Jesus
Quintana is a minor character in the Coen
Brothers' cult classic The
Big Lebowski. He is brilliantly portrayed by John Turturro. His two brief
scenes in the movie have inspired many fans to dress up like him at film screenings and
spawned one of the most popular catch-phrases of the movie, "Nobody fucks
with the Jesus."
Jesus is a Hispanic male with a
hairnet. He wears a purple shirt with his name on it and has an extended
pinky fingernail, probably used for cocaine. He gets very excited about
getting a strike in bowling, as he does a special dance when he does.
Walter Sobchack tells the Dude and the audience about Jesus's background.
He was sent to prison for a while for exposing himself to an eight year
old. When he moved to Hollywood, he had to tell all of his neighbors that
he was a sex offender. He is also very good at bowling. That is
absolutely everything that is said about JesusŐs background in the film, but in
this case, the less said, the better.
He also apparently gets mad when people have to reschedule league games
due to Jewish holidays.
In an interview, John Turturro stated
that the Coens scheduled extra time to shoot so he could improvise. Although this is not common with Coen
films, they allowed Turturro to bring a lot to the character they did not have
in mind, such as the pinky nail and the dance [1].
Many fans have requested that a Jesus
spin-off film. John Turturro even mentioned that he was once in talks
with the Coen Brothers to make a feature film about Jesus [1].
In that film, Jesus was to be a school bus driver. However, this
idea has probably been scrapped.
Eight year olds,
Dude.
