Miller’s Crossing (Place). In the Coen Brothers gangster film the title comes from the wilderness area where people were brought to be killed. The first scene takes place after Tommy is exiled by head gangster Leo when he admits he is having an affair with Leo’s mistress Verna. Tommy is brought on by rival gangster Caspar and asked to kill Verna’s brother Bernie to prove his loyalty. As Bernie is on his knees begging for his life at Miller’s Crossing Tommy fires two shots in the air and lets Bernie go. Eddie, another gangster working for Caspar, believes Tommy did not kill Bernie and takes him back to Miller’s Crossing for proof. While there, they discover a body with his face shot in and the body unrecognizable. Bernie had killed Eddie’s male lover and blackmailed Tommy to help him kill Caspar. Through a series of events, Caspar and Eddie are killed, and this leads to an ultimate showdown between Tommy and Bernie and this time Tommy doesn’t fire in the air.
